This is the first full-scale retrospective exhibition of Vija Cermins in Europe. Cermins was born in 1938 in Latvia, and is an artist mainly centering her activities in the United States. Her works, which are said to have been largely influenced by Morandi, pursue realism to the limit. By depicting still life and the surface of the sea in minute detail, as if seen in a photograph, her works seem to paradoxically expose falsity in the painting. This is a highly recommendable exhibition.

This is an exhibition by Peter Blake, who had a studio within the National Gallery for two years as the third resident artist of this museum, which takes pride in their collection of European painting that is one of the best in the world. This exhibition has a subtitle, "Now We Are 64". Peter Blake taught painting to Ian Dury, was a friend of Peter Townshend from The Who, heavily influenced The Who's costume design, and also designed the record jacket of The Beatles' album, "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band". The subtitle vividly indicates that Blake, now an authority of English Pop Art, has reached old age. In this exhibition, he utilizes the works of great masters such as Vermeer and Rembrandt as motifs.

<<Discord. Sabotage of Realities>>
In the "Week of Visual Arts. Hamburg 1996", an exhibition called <<Discord. Sabotage of Realities>>, which introduces a wide range of artistic trends of the '90's, is being held in Hamburg. Originally, the concept was started in the <<Peace Biennale>> (originated by Roberg Filliou, a famous artist also known from Fluxus, and operated by the curator, Rene Block), and this exhibition is also based on Filliou's concept of "to show peace more excitingly than war". The fact that an act which could be described as a necessity in Germany - to reconsider the concept of "peace" in the post-Cold War era - is being taken up by young German curators, is something worthy to be noted. The organisers are Inke Arns and Ute Vorkoeper who are art/media art curators, and the selection of artists has been helped by, Ute Meta Bauer, Herbert Hossmann, Wolf Jahn, and Bojana Pejic. The exhibition is constructed by 6 theme zones; "control", "news services", "everyday life", "border politics", "state machineries", and "science fiction and economy". There are approximately 35 groups of participating artists, mainly consisting of young artists, but veterans such as Heath Bunting (England), Muntadas (United States), Lynn Hershmann (United States), Nina Fischer & Maroan el Sani (Germany), Irwin/NSK (Slovenia), and Stan Douglas (Canada) also participate. From Japan, Yukinori YANAGI, Kenji YANOBE, and Daisuke NAKAYAMA will exhibit their works. [Yukiko SHIKATA/Art Critic]
