A project entitled the "Belladonna" Exhibition is shown at the ICA, featuring 29 artists from 6 countries. Belladonna is a plant that is poisonous, contrary to its external beauty, causing drug-like effects which include hallucination, and at times even death. This exhibition features the trend that is spreading around the world, collecing works that are "cute but threatening". Japan and the United States have already held exhibitions under this concept, but perhaps for the United Kingdom, this exhibition was the first of its kind. A characteristic of this exhibition is that there are many works depicting landscapes, which have been playing an important role in the European culture. The artists include Karen Kilimnik, Kerry Stewart, and Anish Kapoor.

The gallery of the Royal Academy is holding a rare exhibition displaying the late works by Georges Braque. This exhibition, housing the painter renowned as the founder of Cubism along with Picasso, offers two characteristics about him that are often overlooked. One is that Braque is a representative painter of still life of this century, and that most of his works were paintings of still life. The other is the fact that, later in his life, when he started to suffer mental disorder, his artistic style had changed, and he had repeatedly painted tragic works using a somewhat utopian motif like the "bird". This was a good exhibition which attempted to study the works of Braque, who is often discussed only in the comparison with Picasso, in a context besides Cubism, but it is unfortunate that the number of exhibited works are small.

At the open space of South Bank, the exhibition about Yoko Ono and Fluxus is being held. It was interesting to see how many reviews included their views of Yoko Ono as being the very person who tore the national rock star hero away from the rock scene, and pulled him into a strange world of avant guarde. Because the open space was free-of-charge, there were not so many exhibited works, just centering around posters and photographs. However, since the activities of Fluxus were originally oriented around performance and events, that may have been the natural consequence. The enthusiasm of Fluxus at the time can never be duplicated in retrospective exhibitions like this, but at the same time, it would be dangerous to fabricate history making it look as if Fluxus enjoyed overflowing fervor. However, because Fluxus attempted to broaden the relationship between life and art, to intensively pursue the relationship between the artist and the audience, attempting to broaden the framework of art, maybe more devices featuring its characteristic could have been included in the exhibition.

The Documentary of
On February 9th and 11th, the performance by Ma Liuming, one of the participating artists in the <<De-Genderism>> Exhibition, was held, and its response was unexpectedly big (This is probably also due to the broadcast of NHK's "Nichiyo Bijyutsukan", the exhibit of the documentary photographs in the exhibition, and the word-of-mouth by the audience who were present at the performance.) Because there were many inquiries for wishing to see at least the record of the performance, on March 22nd from two o'clock in the afternoon, the documentary film will be specially shown at the Setagaya Art Museum.
