A conversation overheard recently at the Vangi Sculpture Garden Museum, which gracefully sprawls through terraced gardens in the foothills of Mt. Fuji at Nagaizumi-cho, Shizuoka Prefecture:
Man 1: "What a beautiful museum."
Man 2: "Yes, but it seems a bit of a waste to devote it just to one artist."
Man 1: "Vangi must be a happy guy -- look, that whole pond is given over to a single sculpture." more...

Initiated by the Architecture Institute of Japan (AIJ) with the support of the Japan Structural Consultants Association (JSCA), the Archi-neering Design exhibition is currently on tour through ten different locations in Japan. It opened at the AIJ headquarters in Tokyo last October, then moved to venues in Hakata, Kanazawa, Sapporo, and Sendai, and was most recently shown at the Kyoto Institute of Technology. more... |

Kanazawa is a proud old castle town. Often compared with Kyoto, it rivals the larger city in its wealth of beautifully preserved feudal-era buildings and gardens, as well as its overall cultural cachet. So it is fitting that Kanazawa recently built itself a world-class museum, yet somewhat curious that it chose to make this a museum of contemporary art -- and a very contemporary-looking one at that. more... |
