Dogo Onsenart was first held in 2014, and the current (fourth) edition is the largest yet. It's certainly one of the longest-running art festivals at 18 months, from September 2017 until the end of February 2019. Dogo Onsen, in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture, is one of Japan's "three ancient hot springs," mentioned in the 8th-century Man'yoshu and, legend has it, bathed in by such luminaries as Prince Shotoku (574-622), an injured white heron that recovered and flew once more (now a local symbol), and the deathly-ill deity Sukunahikona no Mikoto, who also recovered and danced joyfully atop a stone. more...

Throughout our history, form following function has remained a core philosophical tenet for architects. Combined with the imagination of the architect, it has allowed the consistent generation of new designs, and ever-advancing technologies have created newer and newer forms embracing the future. Rather than creating originality by imagining the future, however, Paris-based Japanese architect Tsuyoshi Tane proposes that inspiration for originality lies in searching our history. This is the theme of the current exhibition at TOTO Gallery Ma, Tsuyoshi Tane: Archaeology of the Future -- Search & Research, where Tane displays meticulously assembled historical information and images he uses as context for his designs. more...

image image Rumble in the Rubble: Chim↑Pom at Anomaly

To its burgeoning repertoire of artistic firsts, the rambunctious Tokyo collective Chim↑Pom has now added the building-burger. Instead of beef patties, we get layers of junk sandwiched between slices of concrete floor that were hacksawed vertically through several stories of a building undergoing demolition. This and other wonders are on display through 26 January 2019 at Anomaly, a just-opened contemporary art gallery whose stark concrete spaces provide a fitting backdrop to Chim↑Pom's musings on the eternal cycle of urban destruction and renewal. more...
