In "Other Criteria" (Artforum, March 1972) Leo Steinberg referred to the paintings of the young Robert Rauschenberg as "flatbeds," after printing presses. Steinberg was pointing to an important shift in contemporary painting which could be likened to the way different modules are placed on the printer's block, arranged and edited, thereby changing the psychic address of a picture from a vertical to horizontal plane. The One-Mat Study of Takeshiro Matsuura

Currently touring the INAX galleries in Osaka, Nagoya, and Tokyo is an exhibition about the multitalented explorer Takeshiro Matsuura (1818-1888), focusing on his Ichijojiki -- a study room with a total floor area not much bigger than one tatami mat (intended to be just large enough for one person to lie down, a tatami mat is about 1800 x 900 mm, though the exact size varies slightly according to region). more...
