このたび、hakari contemporaryでは、髙屋永遠による個展「re: materiality」を開催いたします。髙屋はこれまで、絵画制作を通して色彩による現象学的な挑戦をつづけてきました。本展「re: materiality」では、ゲストキュレーターとして文化研究者の山本浩貴氏を迎え、作家自身が「存在内に働きかける物質」と語る色彩について、その物質性をあらためて探究します。絵画制作においては、リサーチを伴う顔料の採取・精製、異素材の混合にまで及ぶ髙屋の素材研究と色彩の実践。その新たな展開を、この機会にぜひご高覧下さい。

本展「re: materiality」は、画家・髙屋永遠の新作を中心に構成される。髙屋の絵画における「物質性（materiality）」に着目することで、芸術におけるポストモダニズムの言説では周縁化されがちな物質性を再び（re）考えることを目指す。

日本で生まれロンドンの美術大学で学んだ髙屋は、その作品を取り巻く社会政治的コンテクストに敏感でありながらも、同時に素材や物質性に強いこだわりをもち、死や生といった普遍的なテーマに取り組んできた豊かな二重性のある作家だと言える。

外的なコンテクストを重視するポストモダン美術批評では、物質性が生み出す色や形態といった要素はフォルマリズム＝モダニズムの残滓として忌避されることが多い。本展は鑑賞者の意識の揺らぎを誘発する髙屋の作品における色や形態にフォーカスし、それらの要素の絵画的な重要性を再考する。同時に、本展は単にモダニズムの再興を目論むものではない。ゆえに、髙屋は本展の新作を制作するにあたり、これまでの素材における「ジャンル」や自身が依拠してきた「シリーズ」化とは異なる方法論を模索した。

こうした彼女の新しいチャレンジを、ぜひ目にしてもらいたい。

hakari contemporary is pleased to present re: materiality, a solo exhibition by Towa Takaya. Through her practice, Takaya has consistently explored the phenomenological potential of color in painting.

For this exhibition, we are honored to welcome cultural studies scholar Hiroki Yamamoto as guest curator. re: materiality investigates the materiality of color, which Takaya describes as a “substance that works within existence.”

Her research and experimentation with materials range from the meticulous collection and refinement of pigments to the innovative mixing of diverse substances, resulting in paintings that reveal new dimensions of color and perception. We warmly invite you to experience this latest evolution of her work.

The exhibition re: materiality is composed primarily of her new works and aims to reconsider materiality, often marginalized in postmodernist art discourse, by focusing on its presence in her paintings.

Born in Japan and educated at an art university in London, Takaya embodies a distinctive duality. She is acutely responsive to the sociopolitical contexts that shape her work, yet equally devoted to the investigation of materials and materiality, through which she has engaged with fundamental themes such as life and death.

Within postmodern art criticism, which privileges external context, elements like color and form arising from materiality have often been dismissed as remnants of formalism, or modernism. By contrast, this exhibition emphasizes colors and forms in Takaya’s works that provoke shifts in perception, reexamining their painterly significance. At the same time, it does not aim to resurrect modernism. In producing these new works, Takaya sought methodologies that diverge from the material-based genres she has employed in the past, and from her usual adherence to series.
