「YOKOTA TOKYO」

YOKOTA TOKYO is a gallery and publisher based in Takeshiba, Tokyo. Its predecessor, Shigeru Yokota Gallery, began its activities in 1976 as a contemporary art division of Gatodo Gallery, located in the basement of the long-established antiques dealer Setsu Gatodo in Nihombashi. Since then, the gallery has introduced a wide range of artists—spanning from ancient to contemporary—and has consistently held solo exhibitions, engaging deeply with each artist’s work over time. In 1989, the gallery relocated to its current location in Minato-ku, Tokyo.
In 1991, the Tokyo Publishing House was established as a publishing division, specializing in limited edition prints, artist
books, and photography publications. Alongside its publishing activities, the gallery also began building an extensive art archive, documenting and preserving materials related to artistic practice.
In 2022, the gallery and publishing division were merged under a new organizational structure and renamed YOKOTA TOKYO (Yokota Inc.). Embracing the philosophy of “PUBLISHING = making things public,” the organization engages in a wide range
of practices that encompass exhibitions, publishing, and archiving. In addition to presenting finished artworks, it also focuses on peripheral aspects of artistic expression—process, documentation, language, and trace—making them accessible as part of the broader cultural record.
YOKOTA TOKYO continues to serve as a space where artworks and their surrounding contexts are opened to the public, and where artistic expression is examined through a long-term lens.
