この度、丘の上APT 兒嶋画廊では昨年に引き続き「黒白-Black and White」を開催いたします。
黒白の表現とは字面通り黒字に白描か、白地に墨線で描くことですが、
中国の水墨山水画や岩肌に彫られた文字を墨拓した物から想を得ております。
謂わば、極端に表現を抑え二元的要素のみによって表現する行為の痕跡を指します。
自然の中ではシマウマやパンダが飛び抜けて優れているように思います。
黒い餅カビなど思い返しても、他には、なかなか、見つからないものです。
芸術の世界ではさきほど挙げた例以外には木版画やエッチングの表現世界に多く見られます。
テレビや映画も昔は白黒でしたが、そんなに際立ってコントラストが強かったわけではありません。
我が国の長い文化史を辿っても、墨蹟と水墨画に修験行者の着物などでしょうか。
ですから、今回の展示も主に書に墨絵、鉛筆画、モノクロ版画になります。
時代や文化を跨いで一本の黒白の線で繋げて禅の世界に遊んでみたいと思います。

We are pleased to announce “黒白: Kokubyaku – Black and White Vol. 3,” which has become an annual exhibition that we organize every fall.

This exhibition explores black and white expressions in a literal sense: white drawing on a black background or vice versa. The origins of these expressions can be traced back to Chinese landscape ink paintings, and rubbings of characters carved on rock surfaces. It is, so to speak, a trace of an act of expression by dualistic elements only, extremely restraining expressions.

In this respect, pandas and zebras are outstanding examples found in nature. I also recall the black mold sometimes found on rice cakes, but no other examples come to mind immediately.

Bringing our attention back to the world of art, monochromatic expressions can often be found in woodblock prints and etchings, in addition to those mentioned earlier. Televisions and movies were black and white in the past, however, the contrast was not so strong.

Even though we trace the long cultural history of our country, we can only find them in Bokuseki (traces of ink), Suiboku-ga (Ink wash paintings), and the kimonos of Buddhist practitioners.

For this exhibition, I have selected calligraphies, ink paintings, drawings, and black-and-white prints. It is my desire to play with the world of zen, connecting across different cultures and eras with a single black-and-white line.
