このたび、hakari contemporaryでは西村大樹による個展「Poetics of Climate」を開催いたします。西村は現代の風景画家として、環境課題をはじめとする様々な社会問題を、その歴史性を踏まえて作品に取り込んできました。本展では、急速に普及・拡大するAIに着目し、それに伴う風景変化の可能性を、画像生成AIを一つの制作技法として取り入れながら提示します。

AI利用の普及の背後には、今まさに増設され続けるデータセンターがあります。AIワークロードに必要な電力容量は、2025年から2030年の5年間で124ギガワット増加すると予測されており、これは原子力発電所100基以上をフル稼働させる規模に相当します。また、AIに用いられるGPUの冷却や発電に必要な水資源は、同期間で49億立方メートルとする計算もあり、日本の全家庭の年間水消費量とほぼ同等の規模です。一見無関係に思われるテクノロジーは、電力や水資源、気象や環境の在り方を変質させ、私たちを取り巻く風景は日々刻々と変化しています。

本展で西村は、未来の詩的な可能世界の旅行絵画として、画像生成AIを用いて浮世絵的風景画を作成し、出力されたイメージを見本帳としながら自身の絵画制作を行います。美術と抽象表現が抱える社会や制度、それに伴い変化し続ける現在の風景を捉え直す機会となる本展を、是非ご高覧下さい。


Hakari Contemporary is pleased to present Daiki Nishimura’s solo exhibition, Poetics of Climate. Nishimura, as a contemporary landscape painter, has incorporated various social issues, including environmental challenges, into his works with attention to their historical context. This exhibition focuses on the rapidly expanding use of AI and explores the potential transformations of landscapes by employing image-generation AI as one of his artistic techniques.

Behind the widespread adoption of AI are the ever-expanding data centers. It is predicted that the electricity capacity required for AI workloads will increase by 124 gigawatts over the five years from 2025 to 2030, equivalent to the full operation of more than 100 nuclear power plants. In addition, the water resources needed for cooling GPUs and generating power for AI are estimated at 4.9 billion cubic meters per year over the same period, roughly equal to the annual water consumption of all households in Japan. Technologies that may seem unrelated are reshaping electricity, water resources, weather, and environmental conditions, and the landscapes around us are changing daily.

In this exhibition, Nishimura creates ukiyo-e-inspired landscapes using image-generation AI as travel paintings of possible poetic worlds of the future, and uses the generated images as reference guides while producing his own paintings. This exhibition offers an opportunity to reconsider social and institutional contexts inherent in art and abstract expression, as well as the ever-changing contemporary landscapes, and we warmly invite you to experience it.
