本にきのこの菌を植え、本物の本から本物のきのこを生やす。そもそもなぜ、本からきのこを生やすのか？ 「Mycobook」というタイトルは、Myco（菌類の）+book（本）という言葉から来ている。きのこが枯れ木から生えるなら、紙からきのこが生えてもおかしくないが、これは概念上だけの問題ではなく、現実の問題として表現するために、既成の本に実際にヒラタケの菌を植え、約２ヵ月の間、栽培を行った。

きのこが本に〈意味〉を与え、本がきのこに〈生命〉を与える。その緊張した関係性こそが、私が表したい「〈情報〉と〈モノ〉とのかかわり」を深化させたものだといえよう。

〈展覧会情報〉
monade contemporary | 単子現代では、福本浩子による個展「Mycobook Kyoto, 2026」を開催します。

福本はこれまで、「情報」と「もの」とのかかわりに着目しながら、印刷物を素材としてインスタレーション作品やブックオブジェ作品を制作してきました。印刷物を素材としたアートは、観念性と具体性をもって表現することができる一つの「場」として存在するといいます。

本展では、福本が近年手がける、書物にきのこの菌糸を植菌してできた《Mycobook（マイコブック）》を紹介します。市場に流通している書物は、煮沸し、滅菌されることで、きのこの菌糸の菌床となり、別の形態をとることになります。紙の繊維のなかで増殖する子実体（きのこ）は、インクで印字された文字を巻き込みながら、情報に潜む想念を拡散する媒介者となるかのようです。

きのこの菌糸が書物の文字や頁を分解し、別の文字や頁との接触を可能にするとき、情報はどのようにものとして読解されることになるのでしょうか。書物というシステムをものの水準において分解し、変容させる、歴史の再生工場にご参加ください。


福本浩子
1971年、兵庫県神戸市生まれ、京都市在住。1994年、京都教育大学教育学部美術学科特修美術専攻卒業。近年の活動として、個展に「Mycobook　福本浩子展」ギャラリー16 APERTO（2019年）、「Mycobook」MEDIA SHOP gallery（2021年）、グループ展に「これは本ではない」うらわ美術館、福井市美術館（2010−2011年）などがある。「こみまる展2009」大賞（吹田歴史文化まちづくり協会〔大阪〕）。パブリックコレクションに、2004年「Palimpsestes」いまだて芸術館（福井）、2006年「ふしぎきのこ」篠山チルドレンズミュージアム（兵庫）などがある。

I inoculate books with mushroom mycelium, allowing real mushrooms to grow from real books. But why grow mushrooms from books in the first place? The title Mycobook derives from the words myco (fungal) and book. If mushrooms can grow from a fallen tree, it should not seem strange for them to grow from paper. Yet this is not merely a conceptual proposition. To realize it materially, I inoculated existing books with the mycelium of oyster mushrooms and cultivated them over the course of approximately two months.

Mushrooms give the book ‘meaning’, while the book gives the mushrooms ‘life’. It is within this tense relationship that my work unfolds, exploring the entanglement between ‘information’ and ‘matter’.

〈Exhibition Information〉
monade contemporary | 単子現代 is pleased to present Mycobook Kyoto, 2026, a solo exhibition by Hiroko Fukumoto.

Fukumoto has long focused on the relationship between ‘information’ and ‘matter’, producing installation works and book objects that employ printed matter as their primary material. For the artist, art using printed materials constitutes a field where conceptuality and materiality coexist as modes of expression.

This exhibition introduces Mycobook, a body of work Fukumoto has developed in recent years by inoculating books with mushroom mycelium. Books circulating in the market are boiled and sterilized so that they become a substrate for fungal growth, thereby assuming another form. As the fruiting bodies of mushrooms proliferate within the fibers of the paper, they envelop letters printed in ink, as though becoming mediators that disperse the thoughts latent within information.

When mushroom mycelium decomposes the letters and pages of a book, bringing them into contact with other letters and pages, how might information be read as matter? We invite you to enter a regenerative workshop of history, where the system of the book is dismantled and transformed at the level of materiality.


Hiroko Fukumoto　
Hiroko Fukumoto was born in 1971 in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, and currently resides in Kyoto. She graduated in 1994 from the Kyoto University of Education, Department of Fine Arts. In recent years, the artist’s solo exhibitions have included Mycobook: Hiroko Fukumoto Exhibition at Gallery 16 APERTO in 2019 and Mycobook at MEDIA SHOP gallery in 2021. Fukumoto has also participated in group exhibitions, such as This Is Not a Book, held at the Urawa Art Museum and Fukui Fine Arts Museum from 2010 to 2011. She received the Grand Prize at the Komimaru Exhibition, organized by the Suita Historical and Cultural Town Planning Association in Osaka, 2009. Public collections include Palimpsestes (2004) at the Imadate Art Museum in Fukui and Mysterious Mushrooms (2006) at the Sasayama Children’s Museum in Hyogo.
