木路毛五郎（1936－2003）は樺太生まれ、釧路育ちの画家です。本名は須藤慎一。哲学者・キルケゴールの思想に強く共感し、その当て字として雅号を「木路毛五郎」としました。画業においては、美術理論に明るく、観念的な作風から、晩年における日本的な美の模索に至るまで、探求を重ねました。また美術批評、美術教育など多彩な分野で活躍し、文化・社会活動において多くの足跡を残しています。本展では主に大学卒業後～アメリカ留学前の初期の作品、アメリカ留学の時期を中心に制作され、現代社会における人間疎外をテーマにした〈疎外された人間〉シリーズ、書の筆を用いて線の美しさを追求した〈白い妖精〉シリーズに至る画業を通覧するとともに、美術運動家や批評家としての側面もご紹介します。
　主に札幌を拠点とした木路ですが、高校時代を過ごした地であり、その後のアメリカ留学や個展の開催を支えてくれた友人たちのいる釧路を大切にしていました。本展は画家の生誕90周年を記念し、ゆかりの地・釧路で木路毛五郎の美術を振り返ります。

Kegoro Kiji (1936–2003) was a painter born in Karafuto and raised in Kushiro. Inspired by Kierkegaard, he adopted the art name “Kiji Kegoro.” His early work was grounded in philosophical thought, and he later pursued Japanese aesthetics. He was also active in art criticism, education, and cultural activities.
This exhibition focuses on his early career, including works made after university and during his time in the United States. Featured are the Dehumanized Man and White Fairy series, along with his activities as an art activist and critic.
Marking the 90th anniversary of his birth, the exhibition reflects on Kegoro’s art in Kushiro, a place closely connected to his life.
