Hakari Contemporary is pleased to present LOVERS, a solo exhibition by Ryota Kito.

Kito has explored the relationship between sound and space through works using audio equipment such as record players and speakers. Through playback, recorded sound brings other times and places back into the space we inhabit now. In his work, sound has served both as a carrier of personal memory and as a link between objects and the space around them.

In LOVERS, this interest in recording and playback leads Kito to consider the act of communicating something.

The Voyager spacecraft, launched in 1977, and the Golden Record carried aboard each provide a point of reference. Containing music, languages, sounds of nature and images from Earth, these records continue to travel through space, addressed to someone far away who may or may not exist.

Sending something out is not the same as having it reach someone. Nor does spending time together in the same place necessarily mean sharing that experience. Kito draws a parallel between the vast distances traversed by Voyager and the distances in our everyday lives—between ourselves and others, and between us and the past.

In the gallery, works incorporating light, sound, photographs and playback devices are arranged in a setting reminiscent of a domestic interior. These works serve as devices for reflecting not only on signals and records sent to distant places, but also on what we continue to send to others in our everyday lives.

To draw closer, and to know.
To communicate, and to reach someone.
To record, and to remember.

A slight distance always remains between them.

LOVERS does not seek to close that distance. Rather, it begins by looking closely at the distance that remains between ourselves and another.
