The Hotel Biron became the Musee Rodin in 1919, it uses to be his residence and Rodin donated his pieces to the state of France on the condition that they turn the place into a museum dedicated to him. The venue itself is well known for its nice garden.
They're having two exhibitions, the work of Rodin as a portraitist, not the most famous part of his work. This exhibition shows a big amount of works, different kinds of plasters, marbles, bronzes.. And all these together give a portrait of the French society at the end of 19th century. Portraits of the bourgeoisie, Baudelaire, Clemenceau, Balzac, Camille Claudel.... Some romantisme, and desire of spirituality can be read through the portraits.
かつてロダンが住居としていたビロン邸は、1919年にロダン美術館となりました。フランス国家に作品を提供する代わりに、自分の美術館にして残して欲しいというロダン自身の提案が受け入れられ、今日では庭園が美しい美術館として知られています。
現在、ロダン美術館では２つの展覧会が開かれています。ひとつは、ロダンによるポートレイトの作品。彼の仕事としては、それほど有名とは言えませんが、大量の作品が展示されていて、石膏、大理石、ブロンズの様々な作品を見ることができます。何人かのブルジョアジーにくわえ、ボードレール、クレマンソー、バルザック、カミーユ・クローデルなどのポートレイトがあります。これらのポートレイトからは、ロマンティシズムや精神性への欲求を読み取ることができ、19世紀末期のフランス社会の描写として見ることができます。
Another type of work on portraits is shown on the first floor, video installation by British Artist Gillian Wearing. Two Videos, Trauma (2000) and Secret and Lies (2009) installed in a space called "Confession Box", the videos show people wearing masks and confessing things to the camera. Some of them are ordinary individuals, some are actors and even if the "confession" is shown in a documentary way, it's hard to say where the truth is.
1階では、それらとはまた違った種類のポートレイトが展示されています。イギリスのアーティスト、ジリアン・ウェアリングによるビデオ・インスタレーションです。
「Trauma (2000)」と「Secret and Lies (2009)」と題されれた作品は、"Confession Box"と題されたスペースに展示されていて、マスクを被った人たちが何やらカメラに向かって懺悔する様を映し出しています。一般人もいれば俳優も混ざっています。ドキュメンタリー的手法でこの懺悔を映し出しているとは言え、真実はどこにあるのか、判別するのは難しいものです。
