YOKOTA TOKYOでは、五月女哲平の初個展『遠くに運ぶ』を開催いたします。

五月女の絵画を前にすると、視線は自然と画面の奥へ向かいます。
幾何学的に区切られた面、見覚えがあるのに、名前の定まらない形象。隣り合うはずなのない色の組み合わせ。画面によく目を凝らすと、幾重にも重ねられた絵具や、異なる素材・技法が層をなしています。

闇のなかに浮かぶかたちや光景、ときには人や乗り物、炎や静物。身近なものから生まれた像は、どこか現実との距離をもって、音が消えたあとに残る残響のように画面に留まります。その奥には、ものを冷静に見つめる眼差しや、親しみを感じてきたものへの愛着、そしてわずかなユーモアも滲んでいるようです。

水平にひらけた土地。陽の移ろい。宵闇の向こうに灯る明かり、そして雪の日……。
作家が育った土地の風景や、絵や描くことが近くにあった日常が、作品のなかに、別の距離をもって現れます。

遠くに運ぶ

風景、身近にあったもの、ある時に感じた空気。それらが絵になり、まだ会っていない誰かのもとへ届くこと。今回のタイトルには、そのような想いも込められています。
遠方を望みながら、五月女哲平のこれまでの制作をたどる機会となります。ぜひ会場でご覧ください。


五月女哲平：
1980年栃木県生まれ。2005年、東京造形大学卒業。絵画を中心に制作し、建物や車、人物などを断片化して色面で構成する作品を発表。2011年の東日本大震災以降、鮮やかな色彩から距離を取り、黒や白、グレーで覆う作品を制作。写真やシルクスクリーン、鏡、ガラスなども取り入れ、層・形象といった絵画の諸要素に向きあう。近作では、具象的なイメージも再び見られる。デザイン、音楽など他分野との協働も多い。
主な展覧会に「絵画の在りか」（東京オペラシティ アートギャラリー、2014年）、「裏声で歌へ」（小山市立車屋美術館、2017年）、「絵と、 vol.1 五月女哲平」（gallery αM、2018年）、「できごとども」（小山市立車屋美術館、2024年）など。作品は国立国際美術館、東京都現代美術館に収蔵されている。


[トーク・イベント]
本展に合わせて、横浜美術館館長の蔵屋美香氏と作家によるトークイベントを行います。
蔵屋氏は2018年に武蔵野美術大学が運営するギャラリーαMにて五月女氏の個展「絵と、」をキュレートし、二人の対談イベントが行われました。今回は、当時の対談から8年を経て、近しくも視点を異にする学芸員と作家というそれぞれの位置から、お話しいただきます。

YOKOTA TOKYO is pleased to present Carrying Far, the first solo exhibition of work by Soutome Teppei at the gallery.
Stand before Soutome’s paintings, the eye is naturally drawn into the depths of each picture.
Geometrically divided fields. Forms that seem familiar yet whose names never quite settle. Colours that ought not to sit beside one another. Look closely, and a sense of layering emerges across the works, taking different forms through their materials and processes.
Forms and scenes suspended in the darkness; at times people and vehicles, flames or still lifes. Drawn from familiar things, these images stand at a certain remove from reality, remaining on the surface of the paintings like the reverberation left after a sound has faded. Beneath them lie a measured gaze, an affection for things long familiar to the artist, and perhaps a touch of humour.
Open, horizontal expanses. Shifting daylight. Lights beyond the evening darkness, and days of snow…
The scenery of the place where the artist grew up, and a daily life in which painting, and those who painted, were always close at hand, appear as images within the work, at a different remove.

Carrying Far.

Landscapes, things once close at hand, the air of a particular moment. These become paintings, and may one day reach someone the artist has yet to meet. Something of this lies behind the title of the exhibition.
The exhibition offers an opportunity to trace Soutome Teppei's work to date while looking towards the distance.


About Soutome Teppei
Born in Tochigi Prefecture in 1980. Graduated from Tokyo Zokei University in 2005. Working primarily in painting, Soutome initially produced works that fragmented motifs such as buildings, cars and figures, arranging them into fields of colour. From around 2011, he began covering vivid colours with black, white and grey. Since around 2018, he has incorporated photography, screen printing, mirrors and glass into his practice. Representational imagery has also reappeared in his recent work. He frequently collaborates with practitioners in design, music and other fields.
Selected exhibitions include "The Way of Painting" (Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery, 2014), "Singing Falsetto" (Kurumaya Museum of Art, Oyama, 2017), "Painting and…, vol. 1: Teppei Soutome" (gallery αM, 2018) and "Dekigotodomo" (Kurumaya Museum of Art, Oyama, 2024). His works are held in the collections of the National Museum of Art, Osaka, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.
